Unknown myxomycete (immature)

Kingdom: Protozoa
Phylum: Amoebozoa
Subphylum: Mycetozoa
Class: Myxogastria

This photograph shows the transition from the plasmodial to the fruiting stage in a myxomycete (slime mould). It is emerging from the rotting wood of the log and the sporing structures are beginning to differentiate. Effectively it is in the process of changing from the 'animal-like' phase to the 'plant-like' phase, a change that caused problems for those in the past who tried to classify everything as either an "animal" or a "plant".

Photographed at Yellowcraig, East Lothian.
